About Us

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

We:

o represent Pharmaceutical Physicians working in Australia

o facilitate the sharing of expertise and thereby foster the further education of pharmaceutical physicians within Australia; and

o provide fellowship and dialogue between physicians working in pharmaceutical medicine and physicians in clinical practice in Australia.

The term pharmaceutical physician refers to a registered medical practitioner whose principal work is in the area of pharmaceutical medicine, a medical specialty concerned with the discovery, development, evaluation, licensing and monitoring of medicines, and the medical aspects of their marketing

Wherever we work, we deliver value. In the pharmaceutical industry, we enable our commercial colleagues to address healthcare professionals and patients in the most ethical manner. We help to bring innovative, new medicines to Australian patients and also contribute to Australian healthcare professional education. As part of our daily work, we interact with physicians in clinical practice and help facilitate the understanding and appreciation of the role of pharmaceutical industry and our role within it.

APPA meets 3 or 4 times a year, usually in Sydney as the majority of our members are based there. We discuss the pertinent and very often difficult issues facing the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. Such knowledge sharing enables less experienced colleagues to become better informed pharmaceutical physicians. We support ARCS Australia Ltd and Medicines Australia (MA). We hold the annual general meeting in September or October of each year at which we elect an Executive Committee to administer the affairs of the Association.

APPA is a member association of the International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians (IFAPP). A member of the APPA Executive Committee represents the Association on IFAPP’s Council for the Education in Pharmaceutical Medicine which has a syllabus against which various diploma level courses around the world are being accredited. In Australia, APPA continues to contribute to the University of New South Wales Masters of Drug Development course. Members of APPA assist in the review and creation of the modules in this highly respected course.
